What are the key areas I should consider when hiring a professional and talented interior designer to help me create a home I love?

As with most professions, interior designers have differing levels of expertise, education, experience and innate talent. Finding an interior designer who is your perfect match is highly important to the success of your design project. Hiring an interior designer may seem somewhat intimidating at first, but armed with the right information you can approach the process with excitement at the possibilities. Remember interior designers aren’t there to sell you they are there to help you buy. Here are a few questions you’ll need to ask yourself before and during the consultation process.

What is your main objective? This means figuring out what you want to get out of hiring a professional. Are you looking for someone to come in and design completely with little work on your part or do you see them working with you, taking your ideas and implementing them? Either way you can find a designer who fits the bill. You’ll also want to determine what the scope of the project is you are proposing. Will it be just one room or several?

What is your budget? Unless you’ve already done a lot of research you will more than likely not have a clear idea of the total costs associated with your project, but you will have an idea of what you can spend. Determine if you can handle the expense of a designer and paying for your design project too. Interior designers charge in a couple of ways. They may charge a per project fee or by the hour. Hourly fees range between $30 to $300 depending on the factors mentioned above expertise, education and experience. We’ll worth the money if it fits within your budget.

Does the designer you are meeting with seem like someone you could become friends with? If the answer is “no” you may not want to engage them. When hiring a designer, you have to consider that they will be in your home and around your family and friends. If you don’t mesh right away, you might later have to deal with working closely with someone who doesn’t make you entirely comfortable. The design process should be a friendly exchange of ideas and confidence in your designer.

Does the designer seem more interested in sharing their resume with you than finding out about you and your project?  If this is the case, reconsider this designer as well. If the designer isn’t interested in you and your wants and needs they may not listen to you later on during the project. This can result in loss of effort, time and money which can really take a bite out of your budget. Pay attention to their body language and eye contact. If someone is interested in you they will keep frequent eye contact with you and be facing you while talking. Engage a designer that will take a personal interest in you and your design project.

Do you like their work? If you love a traditional style and the majority of the designer’s portfolio shows homes with a modern flair, then you might want to ask a few more questions about their experience and field of expertise. Match up with a designer who speaks your design language, one who can visualize your style and ideas for your home.
